Heavy debris breaks every rule people have in their head about dumpsters. You are not paying for space, you are paying for weight, and dense material runs out of weight allowance while the container still looks empty. Concrete, brick, flagstone, landscape rock, dirt and sod all fall in this category, and the 10 yard exists specifically so you can fill it and still legally move it.
Landscape rock is the material that fools everybody. River rock and 3/4-inch gravel run somewhere around 2,400 to 2,800 pounds per cubic yard, so a container with a foot of rock in the bottom is already carrying more than a full load of household junk. Flagstone and boulders are heavier again. Sod comes up with two to four inches of soil stuck to it and weighs like wet dirt, because it is.
Keep the load clean and it gets better for everybody. Clean concrete with no rebar tangles, no wood, no trash and no dirt goes to a crusher and comes back as road base and aggregate instead of into a landfill. Mixed loads do not. If your patio demo is concrete plus forms plus the old shade structure, run two containers: masonry in one, demolition debris in the other. Driveway and slab removal

Patio and flatwork demo
Back patios poured in the sixties, sidewalk sections, front steps and stoops. Small footprint, enormous weight, and almost always more cubic feet than the homeowner estimated.
Landscape rock removal
Pulling decorative rock before a xeriscape redo or a re-sod. The most underestimated material we haul. A pickup bed of river rock is already over its rating.
Flagstone and boulders
Front Range patios love flagstone, and it weighs more per square foot than poured concrete. Boulders need to be broken down or handled separately before they go in.
Retaining wall teardown
Block, boulder and timber walls that lost their battle with a slope. Sort the block from the timbers on the ground and both loads stay clean.
Brick and chimney
Old chimney takedowns and brick planters. Brick with mortar still attached is dirtier and heavier than clean brick, so tell us which one you have.
Dirt and soil hauling
Excavated dirt from a basement egress window, a footing dig or a regrade. Wet clay soil is dramatically heavier than the same volume dry.
Asphalt removal
Old driveway asphalt and parking pad millings. Like concrete, keep it clean and separate and it has a recycling path rather than a landfill one.
Why we send the small can
For anything dense the answer is a 10 yard, and that is not us being stingy. A 10 yard filled with broken concrete or river rock is at legal transport weight around the halfway mark, and a bigger container just gives you more room to overload something we then cannot legally pull off your property. A 15 yard makes sense for lighter mixes, dirt and sod, or when the rock job also has a fair amount of soil and roots in it. If you are unsure, measure the area and the depth and call it in. Clean means one material. Concrete by itself, or brick by itself, with no wood, plastic, trash, dirt or rebar mats woven through it. A clean load goes to a crusher; a contaminated load goes to a landfill and gets priced like one. Rebar sticking out is a handling hazard, so cut it flush. Do not fill above the rails, ever, because a heavy can that cannot be tarped safely is a can that does not leave. On placement, we put protection boards down on every driveway, and with dense loads that is not a courtesy, it is the difference between a driveway that survives the day and one that does not. Why can't I just use a 20 yard for my concrete?
Because you would fill about a third of it and the truck still could not legally leave with it. Trucks have axle weight limits set by state law, and dense material reaches them fast. A 10 yard loaded with clean concrete is already a serious load. Handing you a bigger can would only invite an overload we cannot haul, which means a second trip and a wasted day for you.
Can rebar stay in the concrete?
Light rebar embedded in the slab is normally fine. What causes problems is loose mat, long protruding bar and mesh that tangles the load so it will not tip out cleanly. Cut anything sticking past the edge of the chunk. If the slab is heavily reinforced, tell us up front, because that changes both which facility the load goes to and how we plan the pull.
How much rock is in my front yard?
Measure it. Length times width times depth in feet, divided by twenty-seven, gives cubic yards. Then assume roughly 2,400 to 2,800 pounds per cubic yard for river rock or 3/4-inch gravel, more for flagstone. A typical Lakewood front yard rock bed that nobody thinks twice about can run several tons. Give us the measurements and we will tell you exactly which container to take.
Can I mix dirt in with the concrete?
Better not to. Dirt contaminates a clean concrete load, and once it is mixed the whole container gets handled as trash rather than as recyclable aggregate. If a job produces both, load the concrete first and take the dirt in a separate can, or stage the dirt and we will do a second pull. Keeping them apart is a five-minute decision on the ground that saves real money.
Will a loaded concrete can wreck my driveway?
It can, which is why boards go down every time. Driveways across this metro sit on expansive bentonite clay that already flexes with moisture, and a lot of the older ones are thin and cracked before we arrive. Boards spread the load across the rails. If your slab is in rough shape we will suggest the street or the alley instead, and we will say so before we set it, not after.
