Sixteen feet long, eight wide, four feet of sidewall — roughly four to five pickup loads. It is the in-between size, and it earns that spot on jobs with a hard boundary: one kitchen, one basement bedroom, one roof, one garage. Heavier allowance than volume-first cans, low enough to load by hand. Popular for roofing tear-offs in hail season.

Why people choose the 15 yard

Roofing is where this size does its best work. A tear-off is a weight problem wearing a volume costume. Three-tab shingles run about 220 to 250 pounds per square, architectural 350 to 450, and Class 4 impact-resistant heavier still — which matters here, because half the metro switched to Class 4 after the last few hail seasons. On a typical Lakewood ranch, one layer lands comfortably inside a 15 yard.

The scoping discipline is the other reason people land here. One finished bedroom, one bathroom plus vanity, one kitchen down to the cabinets, one two-car garage of accumulated everything. Those jobs generate real debris but they end. A 20 yard would swallow it and leave you staring at empty steel. Read the sizing guide if your project is bigger than one room.

Four-foot walls still let a person load from the ground. That sounds minor until day two of a basement demo, when every sheet of drywall and every carpet roll goes over the rail by hand. Add a wheelbarrow ramp and it works fine. For residential jobs where the crew is you and a neighbor, that four-foot number matters more than the yardage does.

Good fit for

  • Single-layer asphalt shingle tear-off
  • One-room basement finish demolition
  • Kitchen remodel down to the cabinets
  • Full bathroom gut including tub and vanity
  • Two-car garage and shed cleanout
  • Carpet, pad and flooring removal
  • Deck teardown on a standard lot
  • Small office or retail refresh debris

Not the right size for

  • Clean concrete, rock or dirt loads
  • Whole-house cleanouts across every room
  • Multi-layer or tile roof tear-offs
  • Full-house siding replacement debris

Will it fit?

Plan on about 20 feet of length and 10 feet of width, with roughly 60 feet of straight approach and 23 feet of overhead clearance for the hoist arm. Alleys behind older Lakewood and west Denver homes usually work, though we check for utility lines and sagging cable first. If it goes in the street, that is a separate occupancy permit from the city. Protection boards go down on every driveway set, no charge.

Before delivery, move cars and bins, mark irrigation heads and septic lids, and tell us about new concrete, soft ground, a steep grade or low power lines. Our delivery and driveway protection guide covers all of it.

15 Yard Dumpster FAQs

Is a 15 yard big enough for my roof?

For one layer of asphalt on a typical single-story Lakewood home, yes. Two layers, a steep-pitch two-story, or heavy Class 4 shingles push you toward a 20 yard instead. Concrete or clay tile is a different animal entirely — 900 to 1,200 pounds per square — and belongs in a 10. Give us the square count and the shingle type and we will size it in one phone call: (720) 473-6600.

Can I put a little concrete or dirt in with the rest?

A small amount mixed into light debris is usually fine — a few chunks of a step, a couple wheelbarrows of soil. What does not work is loading dense material as a base layer and building on top of it. At 2,400-plus pounds a cubic yard, rock and concrete eat the whole allowance and the container cannot legally leave. Heavy loads belong in a 10 yard.

Do I need asbestos testing before a basement or ceiling job?

If the house predates 1980 and you are scraping popcorn ceiling, pulling old vinyl tile or cutting into original drywall mud, Colorado's CDPHE Reg 8 requires testing before you disturb it. That is a stop-and-test moment, not a formality — abated material has its own disposal path and cannot ride in a standard container. Read the testing overview, then call us once you have results.

How fast can you deliver?

Same day is realistic most weekdays if you call before mid-morning, and next-day is routine. Hail season, roughly May through September, is the exception — after a bad storm the whole metro books roofing containers at once and lead times stretch. If you know a tear-off date, lock the container in early. Same-day details here.

What if I underestimate and fill it early?

Call and we will pull it and set an empty one, usually next day. That is far cheaper and simpler than overloading. Load level with the top rail — anything mounded above it cannot legally be tarped or transported, and the driver will leave it. If you are already unsure at booking, describe the pile honestly and we will recommend up or down. Nobody here gets paid to oversell steel.
