Why people choose the 10 yard
Density is what decides this size. Landscape rock and three-quarter-inch gravel run roughly 2,400 to 2,800 pounds per cubic yard. Do that math against a legal load and you get four, maybe five yards of material before the axles are done. In a 20 or 30 yard can that looks like a mistake — a container sitting three-quarters empty on your driveway. In a 10 yard it looks like a full load, because it is one.
Sod is the one that catches people every season. A pallet of sod is mostly soil, and soil in Jefferson County is heavy clay. Strip a front lawn for xeriscape and you are hauling dirt, not grass. Same story with flagstone patios, brick walkways, mortar bed and tile. If a strong helper struggles to carry one piece, the container should be a 10.
The low sidewall changes how fast the job goes. Three and a half feet means a wheelbarrow ramp is short, a shovel throw clears the rail, and nobody is heaving 60-pound chunks over their head at hour six. Will it fit?
Needs about 14 feet of length and 10 feet of width to sit clean, plus roughly 60 feet of straight approach so the truck can back in square. Overhead clearance is about 23 feet for the hoist — watch power drops and mature elms on the older Lakewood and Edgewater lots. Alley placement works well at this size. How much concrete actually fits in a 10 yard dumpster?
Figure roughly four to five cubic yards of broken concrete before you are at legal transport weight, which is somewhere around 200 to 250 square feet of a standard four-inch slab. The can will look about half full and that is correct — you paid for the tonnage, not the airspace. If your slab is thicker or reinforced, tell us the dimensions on the phone and we will run the numbers with you before delivery.
Why did you recommend a smaller container than I asked for?
Because dense material hits legal weight long before it fills volume. Rock, dirt, sod, tile and concrete all run 2,000 pounds a yard or more. Putting them in a larger can does not raise what a truck is allowed to carry down Wadsworth — it just gives you more empty space and a heavier bill for overweight. Can I mix a little household junk in with my concrete?
Keep clean loads clean. Concrete, brick and block with no trash mixed in can go to a recycler instead of a landfill, and that is a better outcome for everybody. A few stray items usually will not sink you, but a can of concrete topped with drywall, bags and old carpet becomes mixed waste. If you have both, book two pulls or ask about a second container. Will a 10 yard fit in a standard Lakewood driveway?
Almost always. At 12 feet long it tucks in ahead of a garage door on most ranch and split-level lots without blocking the sidewalk. The tight part is usually the approach, not the box — parked cars, a narrow curb cut or a low branch will stop a truck faster than the container size will. How long can I keep it?
Standard rental runs about a week, and most concrete and rock jobs finish well inside that because the weight limit ends the loading, not the calendar. Need longer for a phased patio job?
